christina aguilera: something’s got a hold on me!

August 12, 2010

This scene from the upcoming movie Burlseque has been previewed. As if I weren’t going crazy for this movie already, this scene gave me life. Christina Aguilera‘s character Ali Rose closes shop and belts out an Etta James classic Something’s Got a Hold on Me. With a voice like that, she’ll always be my favorite singer. I’m so anxious to go see this movie over and over again in theatres, with Xtina and Cher‘s big voices blaring from the big screen.

christina aguilera: you lost me!

July 22, 2010

I don’t know how well a ballad in the summertime will fare on the Billboard charts, but You Lost Me is one of my favorites from Bionic. It’s a risk, especially considering her album’s not selling so well so far, but I support risks as long as the product is good. Christina Aguilera (with the help of Sia) delivered a gut-wrenching ballad, and director Anthony Mandler helped bring it to life in this video. It’s a very subtle video, with many effects that play upon the unraveling of a relationship. Despite the sometimes boring simplicity, I love the visuals Mandler uses in his videos, almost like watercolors. This video is no exception. It tells a story without being over the top, like Xtina often times is. I like it.

the early show: summer concert series!

June 10, 2010

Yesterday I took a trip back to the city I called home for the past 9 months, New York! The occasion was The Early Show Summer Concert Series. The artist performing: none other than Christina Aguilera. If you know me, you know this was my third time seeing Ms. Aguilera perform live and you know I was very excited. I never slept Tuesday night and just got on the 4:15 NJ Transit bus at 4:15 am on Wednesday morning. My little sister, cousin, and I got to New York around 7, I think. Since we were there so early, the wasn’t bad at all. Downside was we had to wait until nearly 12 pm to see her perform, so we were in line, tired and hungry.

Look at me striking my Xtina pose!

After about an hour waiting in line, Joan Rivers and her plastic face paid us a random visit! She even threw plastic coins at us. I don’t know why this happened, but it was fierce and so was she.

Around 11 am, we checked in and received our wristbands. We were then escorted into the “arena” if you will. The stage was set up on Fifth Ave, between 58th and 59th, right next to the Apple Store and across from the Plaza Hotel. We had to wait again as the prepped the stage and the equipment. Since I was sleep deprived and hungry, I thought I was gonna pass out, so I kneeled down. Soon enough her dancers appeared, which got me excited. Then XTINA came! She rehearsed a little of Not Myselt Tonight, then disappeared somewhere. I don’t know if it was because of the rain or what. Tease!

Before I passed out again, she came back in a fierce see-through rain jacket (same as the Not Myself Tonight music video). Julie Chen, host of Big Brother, The Early Show, and friend in my head, introduced Christina! I was so excited to see Julie. I forgot her name for a few seconds, but then I remembered and screamed “Julie Chen! Julie Chen! Julie Chen!” like I had tourette’s. She turned and waved to me. I could’ve died then. But I didn’t, because I came to see Xtina.

Christina started off with a teaser of one of her signature songs, Fighter. She then performed current single Not Myself Tonight. She followed that with classics, Genie In A Bottle and What a Girl Wants. I believe the last song she performed was You Lost Me from the new album, and she sounded great!

Overall, I enjoyed myself and was very impressed by her live. It was my third time seeing her live, and the closest I’ve ever been. She definitely saw me and I saw her up close for the first time. I felt like I was dreaming. My love for her as an entertainer and artist grew so much yesterday! I had a great time. It wasn’t live and it will air tomorrow (Friday) at… um, I don’t know the time, just early!

christina aguilera: bionic!

June 7, 2010

Today is the day Christina Aguilera fans in the US have been waiting for! Her fourth studio album Bionic is in stores today! Like most of the world today, I don’t buy albums, but you know I’ll be in Kmart buying my (discounted) copy of the deluxe edition! I can’t wait to look through the booklet (which is the only part of the album that will be a surprise to me) and pop the CD in my car! Maybe I’ll even do an album review. Until then, go pick up Bionic! Don’t take my word for it, just listen for yourself, and you’ll see it’s a great album.

american idol: finale!

May 26, 2010

Tonight was the finale of American Idol’s 9th season. Now, I stopped watching American Idol around the time Carrie Underwood won in season 4. It just lost it’s appeal to me. Now besides the auditions, a random mid-season episode or two, and the finale if nothing else is on, I don’t watch the show anymore. The only reason I tuned in tonight was to see Christina Aguilera perform. Luckily her performance was fairly early in the show.

After underwhelming performance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, I was very satisfied with this performance. It started off with the Idol girls singing a medley of Beautiful, then segued into Fighter. After I said “Where’s Xtina” for about the tenth time, Godtina came out and hit the big note in Fighter. Just when we all thought that was it, all the extras exited stage left, and Christina was left there with her voice and her microphone. She sang a heartfelt version of You Lost Me, a ballad co-written by Sia. It was great and proved all Christina needs is her voice and her mic to shut a performance down. After all the hate, shade, and negative comparisons, there’s only one voice of our generation, and she just reminded us who owns it!

Surprisingly, I continued to watch the show even after Christina’s performance. It was a little entertaining, despite not having watched this season. It was Simon Cowell‘s last show, so they made a big deal out of that. Paula Abdul made an appearance, too. She came out like one of big reveals on Extreme Makeover. It was dramatic. She started to ramble, and it seemed like she was going to be a big tran-wreck. Then she finally made her point. Whatever it was, I forget. Something about Simon.

Another highlight of the night was Janet Jackson‘s performance. The Idols sang a version of Janet’s #1 hit song Again from 1993. Then the legend came out sporting her new short cut, and sang her newest single Nothing from her latest movie Why Did I Get Married (oh the memories…). While she’s never been a powerhouse vocalist, she proved she’s no Britney Spears. She actually has a voice, and can sing live. After her ballad, she ripped off her Matrix costume, revealing ANOTHER Matrix costume, and sang her classic song Nasty. He busted out a few moves, and reminded us she’s Ms. Jackson if we’re nasty.

After two hours of the Idols butchering classic songs, a few video montages, and a few Idol rejects coming back and bringing the lolz, the winner was finally crowned. Lee DeWyze was named the newest American Idol. I named him the newest flop winner. Let’s keep it real, all of the male winners have been flops, and he is reminding me of them. I didn’t watch this season besides two episodes, but I wanted Crystal Bowersox to win. Whatever. What did you think of the finale?

christina aguilera: not myself tonight!

April 29, 2010

Woah!

I don’t know what to say. Christina Aguilera is definitely not herself tonight. I think she definitely took that song title to heart, and took full advantage of being able to go crazy in this video! It’s the Dirrty Xtina we all love paying homage to Madonna’s Human Nature and Express Yourself. I love the S&M theme. She was giving me life in the catsuit, licking the milk from the bowl. I also loved the scene with her setting her old wardrobe on fire like a boss. The product placement, with the phone and her perfumes was a little tacky to me, though.

Besides being sexual in a not-so-subtle way, she is doing it in a church (remeniscent of another Madonna video). Between that, and the inevitable (and retarded) Gaga comparisons, this is sure to cause controversy. But, there’s one thing Christina is no stranger to and that is controversy. Love it or hate it, she does what she wants, and if you don’t like it…

christina on: gaga comparisons!

April 20, 2010

Aguilera also addressed online criticism that she’s copying Lady Gaga with her new album.

“It just comes with the territory. That, in particular, is not even worth wasting the breath to comment on,” she sniped. “I’ve been around for over a decade and I think my work speaks for myself.”

If she were younger, “I would have engaged, been a little upset,” she says. But now? “There’s a bigger picture out there. I’ve got my son, my family, my work.”

As someone who follows both artists, especially Christina, I am so over the comparisons. I hate when people don’t really know the artist (besides a few popular singles and what haircut they have) and try to accuse that artist of copying. Those people are uninformed and sound ignorant. When you know the artists, their history, and their vision as well as I know Christina’s, you can see past petty rumors and false comparisons.

I think Christina handled this maturely and with class! She’s better than me, because after a year of being compared to Lady Gaga (who is not as original as people would like to believe), I’d be throwing bows. To read what Akon said to warrant this response, click here.

my favorite videos: fighter!

April 20, 2010

In honor of getting tickets to see her, I am dedicating this My Favorite Videos post to Legendtina. I can never decide which one of her videos if my favorite, because she has some great videos! From Dirrty to Candyman to Beautiful, they just all give me what I need. However, I decided to choose Fighter, just because the song has been powerful to me lately. I’ve been fighting through a lot of stuff lately, and the lyrics, the music, and voice are very inspiring to me. The video is one of her best. Christina Aguilera was probably the first pop star of her generation to make a really edgy, artsy music video. It’s a simple message, but delivered in a beautiful way.

i’m going to see: oprah & christina!

April 20, 2010

I got tickets to go see Christina Aguilera perform on the Oprah Winfrey Show, at Radio City Music Hall on May 7th (the day after the Sia show I’m going to). Looks like I’ll be taking that weekend off from Pinkberry. This is too much for me to handle. I just can’t. My feelings can only be expressed using the following GIF:

under the spotlight: sia!

March 26, 2010

I am always scouring the earth and the internetz for new artists, because I love expanding my taste. One of my favorite artists that I have discovered in the past few months has to be Australian singer Sia! I found out about her when I first got news that she was working with Christina Aguilera on Bionic. Since then, I have listened to Sia’s music, and really enjoyed it! She is a soulful pop artist that makes great, melancholic ballads, and really joyous uptempos. I really liked Soon We’ll be Found, Breathe Me, and Drink to Get Drunk. I also like Destiny, a Zero 7 song which she is featured on.

Her new album We Are Born is coming out soon (the same day as Bionic I hear), and her first single is Clap Your Hands. She has 6 songs from her album on YouTube. They’re all really good. Check them out! By the way, she’s performing at Terminal 5 in New York City on May 6th at 7 PM! I just bought my ticket. Will I see you there?
